According to a report by the Express, West Ham United want to sign Fulham loan star Alphonse Areola this summer.
Areola has arguably been Fulham’s Player of the Season this term, impressing on almost a weekly basis since joining on loan from PSG in the summer.
The Whites hold an option to buy the Frenchman, but it seems unlikely that the London club will be exercising that option with relegation to the Championship looming.
Areola, who has played for both PSG and Real Madrid, is surely too good to drop down to the Championship with Fulham.
Of course, the Whites could still stay up, but with the Cottagers six points adrift with just five games left, the great escape looks unlikely.
That is an added element to Fulham’s survival quest, they’re not just fighting for their Premier League lives, they’re also battling to keep their current squad together.
Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that the likes of Mario Lemina, Joachim Andersen or Ola Aina would stay at the club if Fulham are relegated, but if Scott Parker manages to pull Fulham out of the fire, there’s every chance that the London club can retain their stars.
Whether or not West Ham sign Areola remains to be seen, but the Hammers will be getting a fantastic goalkeeper if they can pull that deal off.
